<Practice with Uechi-ryu karate do [Tomoekai] Tsukaguchi dojo>

On November 11, Master Fujimoto visited [Tomoekai] Tsukaguchi dojo. Master Hirao and Mr. Tsukadaira from Fujisawa dojo also joined the practice as well. It was a fruitful two hour practice.

Tsukaguchi dojo was opened by Fukushima sensei who used to study under Furugen sensei and became his successor later. Furugen sensei used to be a student of Kanei Uechi sensei prior to the second world war.

Now the dojo is managed by the students of Fukushima sensei and besides Uechi ryu they also teach a style called Kuniyoshi ryu, which was passed down to current generation from Furugen sensei. They are working hard to promote the spread of these styles.

Tokyo branch has been conducting research in order to record and preserve the stages of development that Uechi ryu has gone through from Wakayama period, Nishinari Osaka period, Amagasaki Hyogo period, Okinawa to mainland and abroad period. We sincerely hope that we can promote active exchange between us.

Thank you very much for giving us a precious opportunity.

Research trip to Fuzhou, China

~Tracing the origin of Uechi-ryu~

Tokyo branch and the Paigainoon kempo research group invited Master Tamayose from Okinawa headquarters as a member of the investigation team. The main purpose of this trip was to retrace the footsteps of Shu Shi Wa (or Zhou Zi He) and Kanbun Uechi sensei. The investigation team visited and stayed in Fuzhou city in the county of Fujian, China from August 6 untill August 9 and conducted research.

The research trip was made possible because we had communicated with Fuzhou Wushu Association closely and they offered generous support and cooperation.

The research trip was very meaningful for we could obtain detailed information about Shu Shi Wa, retrace the footsteps of Kanbun Uechi sensee, find the precise meaning/interpretation of the word gPangainoonh and so on.

Also, the photos taken when we visited the birthplace and old residence of Shu Shi Wa are displayed at Lifetown dojo. For those interested members are welcome to visit. (Debrief session is scheduled in September)

Investigation team members:

<Training Workshop for 1st degree and above & Spring Promotion Test>

On May 20th Tokyo branch held a training workshop for black belts and a spring promotion test.

Kanshu bunkai and Dan Kumite w

ere the main topics of this workshop. As of October 2012 Kanshu bunkai will be included as part of the promotion test. We intend that all the instructors and black belt holders acquire this first and then pass it onto the lower ranks.

Also, gUechi-Ryu Dan Kumiteh is the traditional pre-arranged kumite that is composed of techniques that are unique to Uechi-Ryu. By practicing Dan KUmite, we hope to preserve this tradition and hand this to the next generation.

Following the training workshop, five members took the promotion test. Three other members from Tokyo branch will take the test that is scheduled to take place at Okinawa headquarter in June.

Special seminor

Tokyo Branch invited Dojo Master, Takashige Tomoyori Sensei and Senior Instructor, Takafumi Simonojiri Sensei from Uechi-Ryu Karate-Do Wakayama Ryuseikan, where late Grand Master Kanbun Uechi started teaching Pangainoon Karate-Jutsu first time, and held the "Pangainoon Karate-Jutsu Seminar" at Fujisawa Dojo on June 25th. Wakayama Ryuseikan has pass the technique of Kanbun Uechi and his first student, Ryuyu Tomoyori (grand father of Takashige Tomoyori sensei) down from generation to generation up to today.
The seminar was open to the black belts only to learn the original and authentic Wakayama Ryuseikan's technique especially concentrating Seisan Kata. Also Tokyo Branch showed them the Seisan Kata and all of us shared an excellent time to study historical and technical transition from Pangainoon Karate-Jutsu to current Uechi-Ryu Karate-Do.
We thank both of Sensei from the bottom of heart for their effort to come all the way from Wakayama to have the seminar although they had to make just a day trip because of their business.
We look forward to keeping a great relationship beyond the difference of organizations to exchange the information and to study each other for further improvement of Uechi-Ryu Karate-Do.

Address of retirement

I am finishing my tenure of office as President of Tokyo Branch on March 31st, 2011.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you for my retirement from the President of Tokyo Branch with full of support from Shihan and Senior Consultant Mr. Fujimoto, Chief Director Mr.. Abe and down in the Branch.
I believe that not only myself but also every one of Tokyo members could feel how powerful we were when we succeeded the big events of Tokyo Branch 15th Anniversary by all of efforts and mutual help from each one of you.
I will keep making my best effort for further development of Tokyo Branch under new President Mr. Fujimoto to have a successful International Tournament in this October.
Again, thank you very much for everything.

President of Tokyo Branch
Hiroko Hirao <4th Dan>

Address of inauguration

I am Fujimoto who is the Director of Shonan Shubukan and I have been just appointed to the President of Tokyo Branch for the next term by the Tokyo Branch Board Meeting on March 26th. I would like to say thank all of branch officers from the President Hirao and down for a great leadership on the management of Tokyo Branch until now.
At the times when more than one year has passed since our Association was established and foreign members have been increasing and then all of us to go forward for further development of the Association, unfortunately we, Japanese suffered from an huge earthquake. Unprecedented disaster which modern Japanese have ever experienced such as a severe earthquake, monstrous Tsunami attack and trouble on nuclear power plant destroyed the moral fiber and shrunk the enthusiasm of many Japanese people.
However " The Sun also Rises" as the saying goes. Let's carry out the restoration of Japan with our indomitable spirit and much appreciated support from many friends all over the world. We sometimes may have to change the training environment under the influence of electric power shortage. But as I would like all of you to help each other and keep training untiringly and powerfully, and then make it to a big driving force for restoration, I would highly appreciate our members' and their families' continuous cooperation.
Our wish to make a friendship with Ryuseikan people in Wakayama, who have past the technique of the originator Kanbun Uechin Sensei's from generation to generation, was realized recently by a happy chance. There were precedents in some of organizations belonging to Uechi-Style that totally new Kata was created. However my faith is " we never can search for the path of truth without learning the starting point. I, as a member of the Association who hold up the basic principle of Going back to the starting point, would like to deepen the friendship with Ryuseikan people further .
Lastly, I think many people have anxieties that the International Tournament on October at Chigasaki might be canceled because of the influence from the disaster. However I would like to hold the tournament as scheduled to make it as the symbolic event for restoration of Japan and to meet the expectation of foreign members. I would highly appreciate it if all of members and your families would provide us with continuous support and cooperation.

Thank you very much,

Keisuke Fujimoto <7th Dan>
